Q. I have a Dell Laptop that a friend of mine upgraded it from Windows 2000 to Windows XP. It is not internet ready. We just changed from comcast internet to Verizon Jetpack. We bought a netgear N300 Wireless Internet adapter. Once we got it connected The wireless adapter got hot and turned off the internet Jetpack and said I needed a higher port than a 2.0 to connect to. Can you tell me what this means and how to fix it?.
A. It sounds to me like you are mixing technologies here: a Verizon Jetpack and a Netgear N300 provide Internet connections in different ways, and do not (in general) work together. The Jetpack will accept WiFi connections from a laptop or other device and provides internet access across Verizon's cell phone network. The N300 is not an "adapter" (that word means something that is installed inside a computer or at least plugged directly into it, as with a USB port) but a router that also accepts WiFi connections, but that provides internet access through a wired connection (usually to a cable modem or other similar device). They are not two complementary steps on the path from your laptop to the internet; they are each a different kind of access point directly to the internet. The Jetpack requires a data plan with Verizon; the N300 requires a wired connection to some other device, such as a cable or dial-up modem, or a FIOS interface.
If by "not internet ready" you mean that the laptop does not have built-in WiFi, then you must be using the Jetpack through the USB cable. To use the N300 at all, you will have an Ethernet cable running from the laptop to one of the four orange ports on the back of the router, but you will still need another cable coming out of the yellow port and leading to your modem. If my suggested solutions above still confuse you, I suggest that you call Verizon, or Comcast, and tell them what you have and what you want to do (rather than asking to buy a particular device or service) and let them recommend an end-to-end solution for you. Be particularly careful to tell the technician that you have an older laptop with USB 1.x ports and no built-in WiFi and see what options are presented.

I accidentally deleted a password protected Admin account on my laptop and can't log in. How can I fix this?
Q. I was trying to get rid of the need to log in to my computer and accidentally deleted the password protected Admin account. Now it won't let me get past the login screen to either fix the problem or do anything with my computer. It's an old Dell Latitude C610 running Windows 2000 Pro, if that helps at all.
A. There are lot of available boot CD's that can reset or crack the user account's password. I suggest you should try trinity boot rescue cd. This CD helped me to rescue a a whole network system when our system Admin left the company without properly documenting the passwords on a Domain Controlled environment.

Q. my grandson has a Windows XP dell laptop and it says on it now that the system is infected.someone asked if a Tosihiba start up kit would be able to go on it and fix it.would it or does it have to be a Dell product?also would it help with a Windows Me 2000 to fix also?
A. I would recommend downloading Malwarebyte's Anti-malware (free version). Download it from the following website and run a full scan. It is very good at removing all sorts of infections (plus it's free!)
