How do I get all the colors back on my comp...win 2000 only 16 colors and cant view any pics?

Q. I just reinstalled win 2000 but now I have no options to change it to a higher color res its only 16 colors and my pixels only set at 800 by 600 I know my comp can do better then that I just had it set before for more my help is not helping I dont know what my adapters name is so I cant reinstall it please help I cant view much because of this

A. I recognize your problem: You don't have video drivers installed, and this can be remedied several ways. First of all, if you bought your computer from a major PC manufacturer you probably got CDs with drivers, documentation, etc. Find the one that says it contains drivers and install the Video Driver. If it has no easy way to install but the driver file is on the CD, copy the file to your C:/ and name it something like VideoDriver. Go to step 8.

If you bought your video card separately, you should have received a CD with drivers and software on it. Put in the CD and install the Video Drive. It it has no easy way to install but the driver file is on the CD, copy the file to your C:/ and name it something like VideoDriver. Go to step 8.

If you bought your computer (including video driver or onboard video) from a major PC manufacturer and can't find a driver from them, go to their website and find out where you can download drivers for your model of computer. Dell can do this, Hp can do this, Gateway can do this, XYZ Computers can do this. Either install (if it is an executable) or copy the file to your C:/ and name it something like VideoDriver. Go to step 8.

If you're getting nowhere so far, find out your type of motherboard (if the video port is on the motherboard) or your type of video card. You can do this by staring intently at the device and hoping some of the jumble of seemingly random letters appears to be a model name. A magnifying glass might help. We're getting desperate now. If you come up with a name, use your search engine of choice to find <name> driver. Hopefully you'll find the file that you need. Execute if it's an executable, otherwise save the file to your C:/ and name it something like VideoDriver. Go to Step 8.

STEP 8 (named thusly because I felt like it): So you've got the file called VideoDriver on the root of C Drive. Go to your desktop. Right-click My Computer and click Properties. Go to the Hardware Tab and open Device Manager. You have here a list of hardware. Anything with a red X is disabled, and anything with a yellow ! is installed incorrectly (in this case missing a driver). You probably don't have any red X's, but if you do, right-click and Enable Device. You probably have several yellow !'s because you just did a fresh install of Windows. Right now we're concerned about your display devices. Right-click the device in question and click Properties. Update the driver and point it in the direction of your saved VideoDriver file.

Good luck.

How can I set up, in my office network, a hard drive on a Windows 2000 Professional computer to be shared?
Q. I right-clicked on the hard drive on the Win. 2000 Pro computer and clicked "Share" or whatever. When I try to access it from another computer, the only thing that shows up are the printers. Help please.
I set permissions to Everyone and unlimited people can see it.
Also it is a secondary hard drive, not the main C.

A. As long as you share the C:\ you should be able to access it from another computer, go to my computer and map the drive, make sure you do it with the computer name. (example) map drive K folder name (this is to connect to using impc as the computer name) impc\c$ this will connect you to the c:\ of the shared PC.

What scratch ticket would give me the highest chance of winning?

Q. I have a hundred dollars and I'm trying to win 2000. I know the likelihood isn't very high either way, but out of these options which one would be the best -- buying 100 1$ tickets, buying 50 2$ tickets, buying 20 5$ tickets, buying 10 10$ tickets or 5 20$ tickets? I don't know much about scratch tickets so which combination would give me the highest probability of winning?

A. 1. Go to the website of your state lotto and find out what the odds are for each scratch and win ticket.
2. Find out how many tickets are left and how many prizes are left and what they are(the sizes of prizes left)
3. Buy the more expensive tickets, either the $10 or $20 tickets as in general, they print a less of these and the prizes are always much bigger when you do win. Also, if you think about it, what are the tickets that most people buy? You guessed it, the cheaper tickets. So, they make a lot more of them and the prizes get burned up pretty quick.

Hope that helps.

How can I delete Windows 2000 after installing Windows XP?

Q. I just installed Windows XP onto my computer that had Windows 2000, and now I have the option when I boot the CPU, to either use 2000, or XP. I'm running out of space, and I need to delete it.

A. If Windows 2000 was pre-installed when the computer was first purchased, you cannot uninstall it. If at any time you had to do a Factory Reset, it would reset to Windows 2000.
Choose whichever you want to use. If you are running out of space then buy a remote portable hard drive and transfer stuff to it that you don't use all the time such as videos and music.

How do you switch to compabitibily mode in Windows 2000?
Q. I'm trying to install Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Version 11 on my computer but it says it doesn't work with Windows 2000, only XP and Vista. I'm trying to find a way around it.

A. XP and Vista are more recent than Windows 2000, so 2000 will not have a compatibility mode option for those operating systems. You should plan on upgrading to XP Pro if you're on Windows 2000.

How should I configure Windows 2000 machine to connect to a home network?
Q. Hey I have two computers connected to a DSL router at my home. One runs Windows 2000 (and connects to the router using ethernet) while the other Windows XP (and connects using USB). Both work alright.. as in they connect to the Internet. I made the settings on WinXP machine so that it is available on the local network and I can "ping" it from the Windows 2000 machine. However I am not able to connect to it so that I can read/write files to it. Can somebody tell me

1) how to configure the Windows 2000 machine so that it is available on the local network?
2) what extra have I to do to see shared files on either systems?

A. You'll need to do a couple of things.

In the network configuration in Windows 2000, you'll need to add client "Client for Microsoft Networks" and service "File and Print sharing for Microsoft Network."

After doing this, and probably rebooting, you'll then need to select which folder on your hard drive to share. Right-mouse click on the folder and select "Properties" and then click on the "Sharing" tab.

You'll also need to give your machine a name if it doesn't have one already. You do that through the System icon in Control Panel under the "Network Identification" tab and clicking the "Properties" button. You'll probably also want to change the Group to something more interesting here. Make sure that the "Group" is the same for both machines in order to make connecting to each of them as easy as possible.

This should get you going in the right direction.

The instructions for XP are basically the same, except some of the names are a little different and some of the Control Panel windows are a bit different.

Can i upgrade a Compaq Contura aero 4/33c to win 2000 or win xp?

Q. I want to upgrade my computer to win 2000 or win xp.

A. Most likely, no. Windows 98 might not even be possible.

How to install, win 98, win 2000 and Ubuntu in one machine?
Q. Is it even possible?
I tried installing them in that order, Ubuntu only recognized win 2000.

I hope you can help, thanks in advance.

A. yes, using the GRUB bootloader, you have to log into an admin account, access the terminal, then type.

sudu nano /boot/grub/menu.lst
<insert password when required>
then read that, it will tell you how to map out partitions. You need to add a stanza for each OS you want to add at the bottom of the list (beneath the automagic kernel list)
good luck

A. just go to start---->run--->type "\\(Servername)" without the quotation marks and replace (servername) with the name of the server, or \\(ipaddress), you can check the address of the server by typing ipconfig in command prompt on the server, although it is always a good idea to give the server a static ip address if not done already. A. In order to mimic your network, you cannot do it with Windows 2000 Professional. You have to install Windows 2000 Server on a machine and then promote it to a domain controller to install Active Directory. Then you will be able to configure Group Policy for experimenting.

How can I get a Windows 2000 server to properly configure its clients to see specific gateway?
Q. I have a Windows 2000 server connected to a hub. I also have about 20 Windows XP machines (clients) connected to this hub as well. I also have a Netgear firewall, which is connected to both a cable modem and the hub.

The Win 2000 server has IP 10.100.100.1, and the Netgear firewall has IP 10.100.100.141.

Right now, what I'm doing is going to each client and configuring the Default Gateway entry manually. What I'd LIKE to do is have the client's IP settings set to "Obtain IP Addresses Automatically" and have the Netgear's IP address come up automatically.

I'm assuming this can be done on the Windows 2000 server, as it's the DHCP server on the network, but I have no idea how to do it.

Could someone give me a step-by-step on how to do it?

Also, is this the best way to get my network to have internet access? Right now, each client loses internet access about every 10 mins, which a "repair" will fix, but it happens so regularly that it's getting to be disruptive. Tnx for hlp!

A. Pretty simple. Open your DHCP from administrative tools. Go to scope options. The default gateway is going to be option 003 (router). Add your router's IP here. Poof! you're done! It will push out the router's IP as the default gateway to all DHCP clients.
While you're at it, you might consider adding DNS servers as well (option 006, I think... it will walk you through it). This could go a long way towards fixing your "internet down" issues.

How to connect a windows 2000 laptop to the internet?

Q. Hi, my parents said i can use an old windows 2000 laptop, but when no matter what i have tried to connect it, nothing works. all i have is the laptop and the plug in cord. we have our own internet network.

A. Hi! Dana! Great to hear you're still on th e Old Windows 2000! One of my favorites! But the problem being it old is that your ways has to be a little different.

I believe the reason you're unable to connect is because the needed drivers are not installed. I firmly believe your laptops was provided with a Driver CD. Install it. Inserting it, might give you options like VGA, Eternet/Lan, Sound etc... For a LAN internet connection, it is necessary that you install Ethernet/Lan driver...

If you don't have the CD, try downloading the drivers respective to your laptop model. Make sure you mention the model number and the OS. If you can't find for windows 2000, go for windows Me, this should work too, since both these OS's are related... Need more help? Just knock in..

Hope this helps... :)

How to remove the old windows 2000 from my laptop?
Q. Windows 2000 is taking up precious Hard disk space! Have put xp on but need rid of the old operating system, please help!

A. Well, there's no "Delete Operating System" button.

Quite frankly, I don't know why you'd switch to XP in the first place. Windows 2000 completely OWNS XP and Vista. But, whatever, your choice.

You'll have to enter safe mode. I'm not sure if your computer has Dual OS abilities or not, but I presume that you're not asked which OS you'd like to use when you boot-up your computer.

Enter safe mode, and remove every Windows 2000 component that you can find. Short of re-formatting your computer, this is about the best you can do. Re-formatting is actually a good idea, though, when switching operating systems. Find a way to back-up your files and simply format your hard drive, then re-apply your windows XP.

Hope this helps. :)

Q. Ok, I tried downloading internet explorer 6 onto my windows 2000 pro..and an error message pops up saying it needs to be shut down and an error log is being created. Okay so I restarted the computer and this time it wont start up completely and the same message pops up except at the end it says that I have to restart the program. How do you download a software when it keeps giving you a error message?
Q. I brought a RCA mp3 player and I can't download the software it came with to my computer. I keep getting a error message saying i am missing a required service pack. It's telling me I need a Windows 2000 Prefessional Service Pack 3 or higher. I have Microsoft Office Professional XP with frontpage.

A. Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) provides the latest updates to the Windows 2000 family of operating systems. These updates are a collection of fixes in the following areas: application compatibility, operating system reliability, security, and setup. Windows 2000 SP3 includes the updates contained in Windows 2000 Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Windows 2000 Security Rollup Package 1. Windows 2000 SP3 is a recommended upgrade. Windows 2000 SP3 includes Windows Installer 2.0 please see the Deployment Guide for more information.

How can i upgrade my computer to windows 2000?
Q. i have windows 98 and i want to upgrade to windows 2000 for free. is their something i can download to do that? and is it easy?

A. Today, Microsoft will not allow you to install an operating system without it being registered!

Too, why would you want WIN2000, Microsoft support for that OS is dying?

Here are major issues that you should consider doing any thing to your present computer!

DO not take out WIN 98! Your system is running, do not change that!

To change you MUST have 1GB of RAM!
READ your MOTHERBOARD USERS GUIDE!

RAM is cheap, Make sure you have 1GB of RAM and buy a second hard drive for any NEW Operating System that you want to install.

Is it possible to format a hard drive in Windows 2000 and install Windows ME?
Q. I was given a computer that has Windows 2000. However, WIN 2000 seems to have a lot of errors. Is it possible to format it and install WIN ME which I am more familiar with?

A. Yes, it is possible. Put in the ME disk, then reboot. Choose to boot from CD, then go through the steps and tell it to reformat. You will lose ALL your data.

However, i don't really recommend going to ME--it is really a very crappy OS. 2000 is much more stable. If it is having problems, try formatting and reinstalling 2000. If that doesn't work, you can always try ME, but in that case it is quite unlikely that the OS is causing the problems.

How do I fix this PC with continuous error messages?
Q. There is a PC in my household that is completely useless. I think it is running windows 2000. Every time I try to access any icons or even the start menu I get an error message like "Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service" or something regarding memory being low :S. I'm confused. Is there a simple fix to this, like wiping everything? I mainly use my mac and just need a desktop for the leisurely browsing and occasional typing.

A. You could have a bad RAM chip. Hit one of the Fkeys on bootup (whichever you're told to do) to get into the BIOS to see if it "sees" everything that you know you have on that machine. Hard drives, RAM, just look it over to make sure it seems normal to you.

If you don't mind a $20 investment, hit a computer/electronics store and pick up an external hard drive case. Remove the hard drive from this desktop, put it in the case and voila! you have an external drive with a USB plug.

You should be able to plug it into your Mac, and "see" the drive; I wouldn't boot anything up with it until you've confirmed that the drive is okay. You can use another PC and run diagnostics on your drive to see if it is the drive or not.

However, if this old PC is over 5 years of age, there might be other issues; you might even have a virus, or maybe the HD is just packed full and the OS has no room to move.

How do I troubleshoot problems with my Windows Media Player;horrible audio & video to be exact?
Q. My computer runs Windows 2000. Any audio sounds sped up & garbled, like Alvin & the Chipmunks, on speed! Any video stops and/or skips or is extra fast. I've been told it's not the speakers, but the settings for my Windows Media Player, which is running the 9 Series. The person who gave me this computer remembers having the same problem, called in a technician, but can't remember what they did. Is there anything I can do myself, without calling someone to fix the problem?

A. You might want to get the free downloads available at http://www.pcaholic.com
There are many free programs and articles provided there that may be of some use. There are solutions to help repair your windows media player errors as well. Get the downloads to repair your problems and speed up your PC. Good luck!

How do I transfer a program from a Windows 2k Pro laptop to a Windows XP laptop?

Q. Can't find the program CD's. The Windows 2K laptop doesn't have a burner. It does have a usb port. I wish it was another XP machine cuz then I could just use the Files and Settings transfer wizard but 2K doesn't have that. So what do I do?

A. not an easy solution
- usb thumb drive
- copy the folder of the program ( c:\program files\)
- make note of the shortcut that you open to run the program
- copy that location down
- paste into new computer ( c:\program files)
- locate the original shortcut information that you copied down
- browse that folder on new computer and find the program as listed int he shortcut
- open it
- if you see dll errors, try copying the dll mentioned from old pc to new pc and put the dll in the same folder onthe new pc as was on the old one
- if that fails, not much else you can do.
The program will have to be reinstalled.

How can I connect two computers with windows 2000 and vista using a wireless access point?
Q. I often need to transfer files between my desktop running windows 2K and a laptop running vista, but i have to transfer the files from one computer to a flash drive and onto the other computer. I have looked at a ton of tutorials of how to set up wireless networking on 2K but none have helped.
this is my home access point, not just a random public one

A. Its really pretty easy. You just need to put both computers into the same Workgroup, restart, and then access the files you want. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System. Check the Computer's name, you'll need to know each of these. Also on this screen, you should see the Domain name or Workgroup name. Make sure both computers have the same Workgroup name. Make a change and restart if needed. After the restart, to access the remote computer, go to Start > Run, type \\computername\c$ and hit enter. Now you're looking at the C drive of the remote computer. From here, just browse to the folder you want, and find your files. If you need to get to D, or E, or any other drive letter, type \\computername\d$ or \\computername\e$, whatever one it is you're trying to get to.

Best way to transfer files from an old win2k pc to a vista pc without running a newtwork?
Q. I have an old win 2k computer with about 3gb of files that I would like to transfer to my new vista pc.

The windows 2k pc hasnt been connected to the internet for a few years so it is missing the latest service pack and probably 100 windows updates. It also has viruses. Also does not have a cd burner.

How can I transfer those files to my vista computer without having to connect the computer to my network or connecting it to the internet? Also without allowing any files but the ones I select to be transfered to my computer.

I do not want to take the time to install the windows updates nor do I want to clean up the comp because after I transfer the files Im never going to use the computer again.

Any help would be much appreciated!

A. Probably the best thing to do is get some kind of external storage. If it's just a few files, a 1GB flash drive for about $20 will do the trick. Plug it in, Win2K will detect it as a removable storage device, copy the files you want to it, then take it to the new PC. If you have a lot of files, then you may want to invest in a larger capacity external USB hard drive. For about $70 you can get 160-200GB of removable storage, which you can then use later with your new PC as well (perfect for media in particular...music, pictures, video, etc.). Just use it as you would the thumb drive. Just make sure that whatever you do, you don't copy over infected files. As soon as you plug in the external drive to your new PC, do a thorough scan of the external drive, just to make sure. Hope this helps.

What linux Distro should i use for my old PC?
Q. Okay so i've got a old pc.

I've basically put windows 98 on steroids, it has 3 hard drives like 512 MB ram. It's a pentium 3.

so what linux distro should i use.

ps it was originally for windows 2k runs windows XP great.

A. Im running Ubuntu on my old Compaq 1200 notebook 300mb RAM, 500mhz processor, It actually runs pretty good, Im sure your P3 is running at least 1.1ghz so I think Ubuntu is the best OS for you also seeing as Ubuntu has the most drivers of anything built in, you shouldn't have problems with this distro

How Can I Remotely Access & Interact with a Computer Over the Internet?
Q. I am looking for a method to connect to another computer remotely over a broadband connection for my consulting business so I can diagnose & correct problems without needing to be on-site. I have a few requirements:

1.) The method must be secure.
It can be secure either by a form of password, encryption, or by having the user remove the software from their computer when not in use.

2.) Interactivity.
I need to have full (temporary) admin rights to their computer or as close as to this as I can. It would be helpful if the user and I each had separate cursors we could use to make changes to the system, or we could take turns using the same cursor.

3.) Free or low cost licensing.
I would prefer free methods, but if I do need to purchase software to do this, I would look at licensing plans.

Please provide links to the software and/or methods of doing this. I would need Windows 2K, XP, and Media Center OS compatibilities.

A. Simple answer to a simple question. You can use realVNC, UltraVNC, PCAnywhere, Remotely Anywhere, or LogMeIn.
UltraVNC and reaVNC are free., PCAnywhere and RemotelyAnywhere cost money. Logmein is free if you get the basic but if you want to be abe to transfer files and all that then you need to pay for it. Now, I recommend Remotely Anywhere. I use it all the time. You can share files, make system changes, and just about anything you want.

Good Luck

Access software when away from the network?
Q. I have a laptop with Windows 2k that is always on running TrendMicro OfficeScan (virus scan thing). All of the computers in the network are using this as well (the laptop is acting as the software server). How can I set up the laptop so I can get the latest OfficeScan updates even when I'm at a different location with another computer? All I'm asking is how would you set up something that can have a public IP address or something?

A. By Remote Desktop, however to do it safly use VPN client as Hamachi.

http://www.hamachi.cc/
"Remote Desktop" is part of windows (not sure W2k has it,...)
